Volume A is connected to the pressure tank through the gap between the valve body and the plunger. Volume A has the same pressure as the pressure tank.

Due to the larger pressure surface of the plunger in volume A, the piston is pressed against the impulse pipe and sealed between the pressure tank and the impulse pipe.

Volume B is released through a solenoid valve connected to the pilot air system. The area on the pilot air side is larger, so the pilot diaphragm is pressed against the top of the valve body and isolates volume A from the environment.
